Trials and Tribulation Essay Example for Free
Trials and Tribulation Essay Wisdom is something that you gain with age, something that you gain with maturity, but thatââ¬â¢s not always the case, as we noticed with King Lear and Morrie Schwartz. Both from different worlds, Lear and Morrie both acquire knowledge differently, but at the same time, acquire it similarly. Lear was an attention seeking king who wanted everyone to love him and show it and neglected him family, whereas Morrie was the opposite and cared about family and love. Morrie didnââ¬â¢t like the way society was heading, and thought that the world was being brainwashed, whereas King Lear cared about society, especially because he was head of the hierarchy being the king. Lear was afraid of death and wanted to live the life of a king forever, comparative to Morrie who welcomed death with open arms and thought of death as natural. They may seem as complete opposites, they underwent their trials and tribulations differently but came out of it with the same knowledge and wisdom but they realized it at a later age, when it seemed too late. King Lear was afraid of death and intended to end his life as a king, whereas Schwartz accepted death and was happy that his life was coming to a close. Morrie was quoted as saying Oh yes, you strip away all that stuff and you focus on the essentials. When you realize you are going to die, you see everything much differentlyLearn how to die, and you learn how to liveâ⬠(Tuesdays with Morrie page 83). What Morrie is saying is that since he knows heââ¬â¢s going to die soon, he can enjoy life more and be more peaceful, he also enjoys being able to have a lot of time to say goodbye, rather than dying tragically or all too suddenly. At the start, Lear was afraid but after going through so much and acquiring a lot of wisdom and knowledge he finally decides to accept death. Let me wipe it first, it smells of mortality. (Act 4, Scene 6 125-126). This quote exemplifies his new thought process of death as Gloucester attempts to kiss Learââ¬â¢s hand. At the end both Lear and Schwartz acquire wisdom and knowledge through death, even though Lear was reluctant to die at the beginning. Morrie was a very opinionated gentleman about life itself, especially about society. He always stated that society was being brainwashed, as we see in this quote Do you know how they brainwash people? They repeat something over and over again. And thats what we do in this country. Owning things is good. More money is good. Moreà property is good. More commercialism is goodWe repeat it-and have it repeated to us-over and over until nobody bothers to even think other wise (Tuesdays with Morrie page 124).â⬠Throughout the book, Morrie always had an issue with society saying that it was filled with propaganda about things that donââ¬â¢t matter like money or houses or jobs. Rather, heââ¬â¢d wish the world was more filled with love and friendship. On the other end of the spectrum we have King Lear, where he only cared for himself and no one else . He was a very selfish man, top of the hierarchy and did everything possible to stay on top. The things he did as a king was sometimes mind blowing as he once asked that All I ask is that you provide me with a hundred knights for my own entourage. Ill keep only the title of king(Act 1, Scene 2- 136-138).â⬠This quote shows how little he cares about his kingdom, as even with a war impending from France, he takes 100 knights for himself just to show off his status. Only near the end of his life did he realize how terribly he treated not only his family, but society itself and wishes that he were a better king. Once again near the end of their lives do they acquire wisdom and knowledge, but this time through society and how it plays out. King Lear once again had to go through hardship to find knowledge whereas Schwartz already knew and spoke about this topic openly throughout his later years. Morrie Schwartz thought very highly of love to a point where heââ¬â¢d rather die than live a life without love. ââ¬Å"If you dont have the support and love and caring and concern that you get from a family, you dont have much at all. Love is so supremely important. As our great poet Auden said Love each other or perish(page 91)â⬠Morrie grew up as a kid without much love from his family, so as he grew up he understood the importance of love. He realized that people need and crave love and coming from past experience he understands the meaning of love and emphasizes it strongly throughout his later years. King Lear believed that as a king, everyone should bow down to him and love him. He believed that to get somewhere in life, you should beg and show affection to the king, which is exactly what he enforced onto his kids. Tell me, my daughters, Since now we will divest us both of rule, Interest of territory, cares of state Which of you shall we say doth love us most That we our largest bounty may extend Where nature doth with merit challenge?(Act 2, Scene 2, 47-53)â⬠. King Lear made his daughters fight tooth and nail for the throne but little did heà know that secretly they were concocting a plan to divide the kingdom in two and run him out, all because he showed no love and neglected his daughters for the throne. Morrie came to terms with love near the end of his life but nonetheless he received and gave love equally, whereas King Lear had to learn it the hard way, through death. Nonetheless they both end up appreciating their families and acquire knowledge and wisdom. At the beginning of each novel, King Lear and Morrie Schwartz had different views on life. Lear didnââ¬â¢t show any love, cared about his status in society and was afraid of death. Comparatively Schwartz was a loveable guy, was disgusted by society and he accepted death with open arms. But after going through life changing events, Lear turned into the exact opposite, where he started loving his family and friends, started caring for society and started to accept death with open arms, just like Morrie. So in the end both characters come from different worlds, both reunited by a single goal, even though they didnââ¬â¢t go through the same vigorous path, it was quite similar. The main goal was to acquire knowledge and wisdom, and they for sure attained their goals.
Chapter Iv Shivaji The Great Guerrilla History Essay
Chapter Iv Shivaji The Great Guerrilla History Essay 32. Shivaji practised more than three hundred years ago the tenets of guerrilla warfare which guerrilla leaders have theorised today. It is unfortunate that no Indian author ever developed the objective and analytical style of writing history. If only Shivaji had a Sun Tzu or a Kautilya in his court or a chronicler like Edgar Snow or Payne to leave behind an account of how he planned his tactics and strategy in the hours of crisis and the words of wisdom he uttered in his directives to his commanders, we would have amassed such a huge mass of literature on guerrilla warfare. Early Life 33. Shivaji belonged to the Bhosle clan of Marathas which claimed descent from the Sisodia ranas of Udaipurà [9]à . His father, Shahji was the first Maratha chief to defy the Mughal authorities, dodging and deluding their renowned generals. Shahji became a living example to his son, Shivaji, teaching him how the weak could wear out the strong. 34. Shivaji was born in the fort of Shivneri near Pune in 1627 AD.à [10]à It was a tumultuous period of bitter contest between the Mughals and Shahji, who was being 17 pursued by his own father in law , Lukhoji Jadhav. During this period , Shahji was in service of the Adilshah.à [11]à Shivaji stayed in Bijpur for a short period of time. He provoked the court by failing to observe the court etiquette and made a slight salaam instead of bowing to the ground.à [12]à His father and mother, Jijabai advised him on matters of respect to elders and virtues of obedience and cooperation. Preparation to Meet his Destiny 35. Due to years of suffering since her marriage, Jijabai had developed strong character and a spirit of dauntless courage and defiance, which she was determined to inculcate into her son. She had great moral and spiritual influence on him. If his father could defy the might of the mughals for years, why could not Shivaji continue and complete his work? While Jijabai moulded Shivaji to be a stern disciplinarian and far sighted, supervision of formal education was entrusted to Dadoji Kondev.à [13]à 36. Dadoji Kondev was the manager of Shahjis Pune jagir. In 1642, he brought Jijabai and Shivaji from Karnataka to Pune and built Lal mahal for them to reside. He was a person of extraordinary integrity and devotion to his masters. But the greatest influence on Shivaji was of the unadorned nature and beauty of the mountains. He surveyed all inaccessible regions, studying routes of communication, bypaths and tracks and valleys. He appreciated that this terrain was best to oust the foreigners. While seeing his own countryside, he came in contact with his countrymen and developed long lasting friendships.à [14]à 18 37. The news of Shivajis prep for achieving swaraj reached the Bijapur court. All of sudden , Shahji was declared as a rebel by the Bijapur sultan. In 1645, at the age of sixteen, Shivaji took an oath to free his countrymen and establishing Hindavi Swaraj. By then he had collected a thousand mawlas under him. Outwardly he continued to profess full loyalty to the Bijapur sultan and urged that his own activities were intended to put down lawlessness and disorder in the hilly regions. Fort Based Tactics 38. Shivaji developed fort based and fort centric tactics. His aim was to capture as many forts possible, that too without a fight. Most of the hills and mountains were neglected by the Muslim rulers and they failed to exploit the terrain . Shivaji occupied Torna, twenty miles south west of Pune. Torna fell in Shivajis hands with persuasion and guile and without a drop of blood in 1646. Till 1648, Shivaji captured numerous forts of strategic importance ie Kondana (later Sinhgarh), Raigad, Vishalgad, Purandar etc. By the end of 1648, Shivaji gained mastery over the parganas of Pune , Mawal and Supa. The numbers of his followers swelled in rank as days passed by. Clashes with Bijapur 39. Shivajis first open clash with the Bijapur sultan was in 1648, when he occupied Kondana fort. Till then he had avoided open conflict with the sultan, knowing fully well that he did not stand any chance in open combat. The sultan despatched Fateh Khan, a well known general to teach Shivaji a lesson. Shivajis 19 meagre force of 5000 completely routed Fateh Khans forces by raiding parties organised by Shivaji and his mawalas. Fateh Khan returned to Bijapur. Thus a shattering blow was delivered on the sultan.à [15]à 40. In 1648, Shahji was arrested on false charges of conspiring with the Sultan of Golkonda. He was paraded as a mere criminal in the streets of Bijapur. He was later reinstated in 1653, but was never allowed to leave Karnataka. Shahjis virtual house arrest in Karnataka put restrictions on Shivajis activities. Shahjis letter to Shivaji advising him to give up Kondana, put Shivaji in a dilemma . Shivaji now, most tactfully displayed servile attitude towards the Mughal Emperor, invoking his patronage. Expansion 41. Shivaji was a pragmatist, ethics of war had no place in his philosophy; he was fighting a war of liberation for his country and he was keen on securing his ends without bothering about morality of the means. But there were some basic precepts of human behaviour which did not flaunt even while dealing with the enemy. In his expansion, he soon captured Barmati, Indapur, Tikona, Lohgad, Rajmachi, Supa, Javli and Purandar. Javli was later renamed, Raigad in 1674. 42. Slowly but surely , Shivaji was expanding his kingdom right under the watchful eye of the Bijapur sultan. Patronage of the mughal emperor paid good dividends. Shivaji had to arrest his wifes brother for not participating in the freedom struggle on his side. Following the tenets of guerrilla warfare, Shivaji did not relax and busied 20 himself in continuous activity. The recruitment ground of his mawla troops increased rapidly. Two miles west of Javli, he constructed fort Pratapgad, which control eight passes crossing the ranges into Konkan from Mahabaleshwar and Wai. Shivaji now eyed the fertile fields of Konkan. When in 1656, Mohd Adilshah of Bijapur died, Shivajis activities increased considerably. Confrontation with the Mughals 43. In November 1656, Aurangzeb obtained permission from Shah Jahan to invade Bijapur. Mir Jumla and Shahistakhan joined him on this adventure. Shivaji assessed that taking on the Mughals alone was impossible, therefore he raided Dabhol in Bijapur territory and captured it. He pleaded with Aurangzeb, that he be allowed to retain his spoils of the Bijapur territory. Aurngazeb , happy that Shivaji was on his side, permitted that. Aurangzeb was decimating Bijapur and was capturing territory after territory. Shivaji knew that with the Bijapur sultan gone, Aurangzeb would turn against him. He therefore launched several raids in the mughal governed areas. Shivaji captured Junnar in Mughal territory and marched against Ahmednagar and gained a lot in terms of horses and money. The news of Shivajis raids annoyed Aurangzeb and ordered revenge. 44. Shivajis possessions in Pune and Chakan were utterly ruined. Fortunately, Shah Jahan fell ill and Aurangzeb rushed back to Delhi to participate in the war for succession. While he was away, he sent a message to Adil Shah to expel Shivaji. With astuteness, Shivaji too sent ambassadors to Aurangzeb and accepted his 21 overlordship and demanded that Kokan be given to him as a jagir. Aurangzeb granted the jagir of Konkan to Shivaji. He consolidated his gains in Konkan by building sea forts and raising a navy under Kanhoji Angre. In the Konkan, he got into conflict with the Siddis,à [16]à English and the Portuguese over the control of the sea ports. He finally defeated the Siddis and forged a treaty with the English and the Portuguese. Challenge to Bijapur 45. By the end of 1657, Shivajis small Maratha kingdom was organised on solid foundations. He had 10,000 mawal infantry and 10,000 horsed cavalry. He also had a substantial navy. In 1656 , Adilshah died and there was a nineteen year old boy on the throne. To punish Shivaji, it was decided to despatch Afzal Khan, a general of high repute who had valiantly fought the mughals recently. By Sep 1659, he marched against Shivaji with 10,000 cavalry and foot detachments of mountain guns and rockets carried on camel backs. He tried to win over the Deshmukhs to his side, but to no avail. They remained loyal to Shivaji. He caused plunder enroute to Wai and desecrated many temples. A meeting was arranged between Shivaji and Afzal Khan on 10 Nov 1659. As Shivaji bowed to Afzal Khan, he embraced Shivaji in a death grip. Shivaji having worn body armour, was not affected. Shivaji tore open Khans bowels as he thrust his dagger deep inside him.à [17]à 22 Battle of Pratapgarh 46. Shivaji hastened back to Pratapgad and a cannon was fired to signal the infantry which was positioned at critical passes to cut off the fleeing Khan army . In the battle, Khans army lost over 3,000 men. Immense booty fell in the hands of the Marathas 4,000 horses,1,200 camels , 65 elephants and lots of cash and jewellery. 47. The battle of Pratapgad is an excellent to demonstrate how a guerrilla commander is initially compelled to fight a defensive battle. The enemys superiority in arms and numbers had to blunted before converting the defensive tactics into offensive. Shivaji suspected treachery and was ready to meet the Khan. Shivaji lured Afzal Khan into the interior of the hilly region and annihilated his forces. This well executed operation was the final nail in the Bijapur coffin.à [18]à Second Front by the Mughals 48. Shivaji challenged the mughal authority by raiding Junnar and Ahmednagar and exacting taxes from them. The mughal emperor sent Shahitskhan to teach him a lesson. Shahistakhan was beaten back with his fingers cut.à [19]à Then Aurangzeb sent Mirza Raje Jaisingh against Shivaji.à [20]à Jai Singh was a great soldier, he cast his net far and wide and invited the Siddis , Adilshah and the English to join him against Shivaji. Due to the triple alliance, Shivaji had to enter into a treaty with Jai Singh i.e. Treaty of Purandar. According to the treaty, Shivaji was to surrender 23 forts of the 35 held by him and his son Sambhaji was to proceed to Delhi as a courtier in Aurangazebs court.à [21]à Shivaji agreed and himself proceeded to Agra to meet the 23 mughal emperor. He was kept under house arrest, from where he escaped. This caused a major embarrassment to Aurangzeb. Shivaji came back to Deccan and reconquered all the lost forts. Shivaji a Top Guerrilla Leader 49. Shivaji believed in the tenets of guerrilla warfare. He was a voracious reader and an ardent follower of Kautilyas Kut Niti. He learnt the importance of terrain in guerrilla war in his early years and never confronted the enemy in open combat. Few of his Guerrilla tactics can be summarised as below:- (a) Use terrain to own advantage. Shivaji as a boy travelled all over the Mawal region and found the terrain was suitable for resisting Adilshah and the Mughals. The western ghats from Junnar in the north to Mahabaleshwar in the south have been cut by nature into valleys and each valley is fed by a separate river .These valleys are called mawals. High hills tower over these valleys where forts were constructed. (b) Be kind to people. Shivaji knew that his greatest strength was the people of his land. He won over the loyalty of his people by being one of them. He also won over his opponents by his forthrightness and good conduct. (c) Intelligence is the essence of all operations. Shivaji very early realised the importance of intelligence . He had a full fledged department of 24 spies who provided vital information of political, military and social nature. He had a well oiled system of horsemen and runners to disseminate information at the earliest. (d) Treat women folk with respect. Shivaji was especially harsh on his soldiers who didnt respect women. He treated the women folk of Suratà [22]à with respect , when he raided the city. He expected the same from his men. Any digression in this aspect was met with harsh punishment. (e) Religious tolerance. Shivaji was a devout Hindu, but was far from fanaticism. He was highly tolerant and respectful of other religions. He was never actuated by a feeling of hatred towards the Muslims as a people or the religion itself. The people of his kingdom had complete religious freedom His chief naval commanders were Muslims. (f) Fort based tactics. Shivaji developed and devised a techinique of defence and offence through a hundreds of forts as a necessary adjunct of guerrilla methods adopted by him. There are three lines of distinct forts in Maharashtra which can be recognised even in present day. The main forts are on the top of the Sahayadri range; then there are two main lines of them, one on the eastern and other on the western spurs of the mountain ranges. In addition, some sea forts were constructed by Shivaji on inaccessible rocks near the sea coast as a counter to foreign maritime powers. Sindhudurg, Vijaydurg, Kolaba and Suvarnadurg are some of his major sea forts. 25 (g) Strict discipline. Shivaji maintined a high standard of discipline in his army. Whatever booty was obtained by the army during the campaigns had to be deposited in the treasury. Khafi Khan, a critic of Shivaji writes, He made it a rule, that whenever his followers went plundering, they should do no harm to mosques, Book of God or women of any one. Whenever a copy of Quran fell into his hands, he treated it with respect and gave it to some of his Muslim followers.à [23]à (h) Guile. Shivaji was a master mind in bluffing his enemies. Afzal Khan fell into his trap and paid with his life. At the siege of Panhala, Siddi Jauhar was lulled into inactivity by a promise of surrendering the fort.à [24]à Bahadur Khan was befooled by him as he was convinced of a submission of a petition seeking negotiations and pardon by the emperor (j) Speed, Surprise and Audacity. Shivaji was a man of terrific speed and mobility, which helped him to gain surprise. Nobody could know where he would be the next day. He was always on the move, avoiding engagement with the better equipped and numerically superior enemy. He followed the principle of surprise to harass the enemy, when he was not prepared to meet him. Shivaji was bold and fearless and led his men personally on distant and perilous campaigns. 26 Conclusion 50. Shivaji was a benevolent ruler, a liberal and a constructive administrator. If out of nothing he could carve out an independent kingdom against formidable enemies, it was because of his single-minded honesty of purpose, dauntless courage, persistent pursuit of a high objective , military foresight and astute diplomacy . It is unfortunate that, he was always at a state of war and died in the prime of his glory. Ramdas called him Sarvadnya lord of all sciences.

Karl Marx and Capitalist Alienation Essay -- Alienation Marxism Marxis
The concept of alienation plays a significant role in Marx's early political writing, especially in the Economic and Philosophical Manuscripts of 1848, but it is rarely mentioned in his later works. This implies that while Marx found alienation useful in investigating certain basic aspects of the development of capitalist society, it is less useful in putting forward the predictions of the collapse of capitalism. The aim of this essay is to explain alienation, and show how it fits into the pattern of Marx's thought. It will be concluded that alienation is a useful tool in explaining the affect of capitalism on human existence. In Marx's thought, however, the usefulness of alienation it is limited to explanation. It does not help in either predicting the downfall of capitalism, or the creation of communism. Marx takes his idea of alienation from Feuerbach, who shows the alienation of man from God. Briefly, Feuerbach's argument is that God is created by man as the 'projection of man's species-essence, the totality of his powers and attributes raised to the level of infinity' (1). Religion alienates man by reversing the relationship between the subject and predicate - the Deity is supreme over man, even though it is created by man. Leszek Kolakowski suggests that the clearest material example of religious alienation is blood sacrifice. In general, therefore, alienation of man is the process that separates man from part of himself. In Feuerbach, the separation is between man and the god created in man's image. In Marx, as shall be seen, alienation is the separation between man and his life-activity, his product, society and the species. Each of these four relations can be seen as one aspect of man being separated from himself. .. ...(rather than local) being. Explore Austenââ¬â¢s Presentation Of Marriage in Pride & Prejudice Essays
Explore Austenââ¬â¢s Presentation Of Marriage in Pride & Prejudice Marriage forms the basis of the events featured in Pride and Prejudice and is presented in various ways in order to convey to readers the importance of it in society and the expectations which come with it. Throughout the book, Austen clarifies what makes a good marriage and how society views marriage as a unity of equal classes and a way to establish connections. The first aspect of marriage which is revealed is the way a personââ¬â¢s position in society affects the choice of partner. Austen states in the opening line of the book: ââ¬Å"It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wifeâ⬠This line both sets out the beliefs that were held by society at the time, but also the tone of the book and the attitudes of the characters featured. From this line, we can learn that society considered marriage to be not only a unity of two people but also a unity of assets and connections in society. The expectations held by people are also revealed in the way that it is expected of men with a sound financial status to succeed in marrying a woman of equal if not higher status in order to maintain the connections previously established. This line stresses the belief that wealth was of great importance in society and that it was a factor that was taken into consideration even before love and was believed to form the basis of a successful marriage. Another aspect portrayed by this line is the extent to which Austen included irony in her writing. The word universal for example indicated that this is a worldwide belief, however, it is the belief of the several characters portrayed throughout th... ...formed due to the upbringing of people in different classes and the fact that women at the time had very few rights and little independence and therefore relied on men much more than in todayââ¬â¢s society. Due to the extreme differences between the classes, many views were held in order to keep money in one family; such as the view of arranged marriages between relations. Society had very strict views on what was and was not acceptable behaviour and people such as Lydia who broke these unwritten codes of conduct suffered exclusion from society. Although the storyline speaks about love and marriage, it also reveals to readers other aspects of society which are not as positive, such as a marriage of convenience, and therefore helps readers to understand why many characters acted in the way they did and how society affected behaviour and influenced decisions.

CLIMATE CHANGE: I. 1.Greenhouse gas emission: Greenhouse gas emission (CO2, CH4, N2O) has continuously increased globally since the industrial revolution, especially due to humanââ¬â¢s activities including the exploitation of fossils for industrial and agricultural production and transportation. Greenhouse gas accumulated over an extended period causes a greenhouse effect, which raises the global temperature. The level of greenhouse gas per person in Vietnam is lower than the worldà ¢â¬â¢s average level (Table 1. ), but Vietnam is one of the countries that is most affected by climate change. Table 1. 1. Estimated greenhouse gas emmission level per person Unit:à Tonsà ofà CO2à equivalent/person | Year 2004| Year 2010| America *| 20| 21,6| Europe *| 11| 11| The worldââ¬â¢s average *| 5| | China *| 4| | Vietnam **| 1,5| 1,6| Source:à (*)à Climateà Changeà 101:à Understandingà andà Responding toà Globalà Climateà Change,à 2007 (**)à Estimationà inà Vietnamà Initialà Nationalà Communicationà ââ¬âà Underà the Unitedà Nationsà Frameworkà Conventionà onà Climateà change,à MoNRE,à 2003Vietnam conducted a greenhouse gas emission inventory in 1993 (The first national inventory notice, 2004), in 1998 (Greenhouse gas emmision inventory report, 2008) and in 2000 (The second national notice, 2010). The inventory result showed that the total greenhouse gas emission in 2000 was 150. 9 million tons of eq. C O2. The emission structure has changed however compared to the previous years. The proportion of emission compared to the total figure has increased in the sectors of waste, energy and industrial processes (Diagram 1. ). Diagram 1. 1. The evolution of GHG emission of each sector in 1993,1998,2000 The inventory result in 2000 showed that agriculture was the biggest source of emission with 65 million tons of eq. CO2 (accounting for 43. 1%), which was followed by the energy sector (35%). But the agricultural emission proportion compared to the total emission reduced against the previous 2 inventories. GHG emission inventory research in sectors showed that only forestry and land use restructuring were able to absorb and reduce CO2.CO2 absorption by the forests and other kinds of land coverage was 75. 74 million tons of eq. CO2, and by soil 90. 85 million tons of eq. CO2. Totally, GHG emission from agriculture and land use restructuring was 15. 1 million tons, accounting for 10% of the t otal emission. There is much scientific evidence showing that the earth is heating up due to increasing GHG emission and global climate change is taking place rapidly and with significent impact. Thus, if GHG emission continues to increase, the impacts of climate change will be more serious.Countries, that have long coastlines and are located near the equator like Vietnam will have to face great impacts from climate change. I. 2. Manifestation of climate change in Vietnam: Climate change is taking place and causing great changes, which are shown in extreme and unusual weather phenomena experienced recently such as increasing temperature, strong storm, heavy rains, floods, drought, and rising sea level etc. Temperature: Over the last 50 years (1958-2007), the annual average temperature in Vietnam increased from between 0. ââ¬â 0. 7à °C. The temperature in winter rose faster than that in summer and the temperature in the north rose faster than that in the south. In 2007, the annu al average temperature in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang were higher than the average figures in 1931 to 1940 by 0. 8 -1. 3à °C and higher than that in 1991 ââ¬â 2000 by 0. 4- 0. 5à °C (Source: The National Target Program to Respond to Climate Change, MONRE, 2008). Rainfall: In each region, there was no big change in the annual average rainfall in each period and in different locations. However the annual rainfall reduced in the Northern climatic zones and increased in the Southern climatic zones. The national average rainfall over the last 50 years (1958 ââ¬â 2007) reduced by 2%. However, rainfall pattern within the year changed with a negative trend: increasing in the rainy season and reducing in the dry season. Cold air: The number of cold spells that affected Vietnam reduced remarkably over the past 2 decades. However, unusual manifestation appeared more regularly. The latest one was a chilly cold spells that lasted for 30 days in January and February in 2008 in the Northern region. (Source: The National Target Program to Respond to Climate Change, MONRE, 2008). Storm: In the recent past 5 to 6 decades, the frequency of tropical cyclones on the East sea increased by 0. 4 storm per decade; the frequency of tropical cyclones affected Vietnam increased by 0. 2 storm per decade; in recent years, high intensity storms appeared more regularly. The stormââ¬â¢s orbit trended southward and the stormy season ended later. Many storms travelled unusually and irregularly. Source: Vietnamââ¬â¢s second notice to the UN Convention Frame work on Climate Change, MONRE, 2010). Sea level: Monitoring data at Marine Observatories along Vietnamââ¬â¢s coastline showed that the average rise in sea level was 3mm/year (from 1993 ââ¬â 2008) equivalent to the worldââ¬â¢s average rate of increase. Over the last 50 years, sea level at Hon Dau marine observatory rose by 20cm (Source: The National Target Program to Respond to Climate Change, MONRE, 2008). II. IMPACT OF CLIMATE CHANGE ON THE ENVIRONMENT AND SOCIO-ECONOMY Climate change is one of the biggest challenges for human beings in the 21st century.Climate change will cause serious impacts on production, life and environment globally. Increasing temperature and rising sea level causing flooding together with saline water sources that negatively affects agriculture will increase industrial risks and negatively impact future socio-economic systems. II. 1. Impacts on ecosystems: Sea water rise, more high-intensity natural disasters, sediment levels and saline level increases all have impacts on natural ecosystems. Rising sea level accelerates the landslide rate in the coastal areas and river mouths. It leads to the disappearance of mangrove forest such as the mangrove forest east of the Ca Mau cape, which is the natural habitat of many species. Rising sea level also floods the coastal areas, which has an impact on the growth of mangrove trees, especially those that are able to retain si lt banks and thus raise the level of the coastal areas, such as Avicennia, Sonneratia alba. Due to the impacts of climate change, natural forest ecosystems such as the dry dipterocarp forests, verdurous forests and deciduous forests have all reduced in acreage. The boundary of primeval forests and secondary forests can also change as a result. The dry dipterocarp forests will expand to the north; deciduous forests of drought tolerant plants will grow more strongly. High temperature can also lead to the extinction of some kinds of fauna and flora. Some kinds of plants such as aloe wood, textured wood and siadora Vietnamese, etc, can become extinct. Hundreds of animal species and plants have to change their habitats and life spans to adapt to climate change. II. 2. Impacts on the economy:Climate change has sizably impacts on some economic sectors, which indirectly put pressure on the environment II. 2. 1. Impacts on agriculture and aquaculture: Rising sea water and salt water intrusion in the Mekong River Delta and some areas in the Red River Delta, which are major agricultural hubs, threatens agricultural production and national food security. Salinity of 1â⬠° has intruded landward by 50-60 km and salinity 4â⬠° (harmful to plants) has intruded by 30-40 km from the river mouth. Source: The Southern Institute of Water Resources Research, 2008). The Mekong River Delta, which has 1,77 million ha of saline land, accounting for 45% of the total area, would be the most affected in the country. If sea level rises 30 cm, salinity of major branches of the Mekong River Delta would intrude by a further 10km. Source:à Vietnamà Insituteà ofà Meterologyà Hydrometeorology andà Environment,à MONRE,à 2010Increasing temperature would have impacts on productivity, increase the risk of diseases and change the plant structu re, which would cause food insecurity. Scientists have said that if the temperature increases 1à °C, it will affect 25% of productivity, such as rice at 10%, corn 5-20%, (would be 60% if the temperature rises 4à °C). The boundary of tropical plants will change toward higher mountain areas and northward. Increasing temperature affects the metabolism, growth rate, reproduction and seasonal crops of aquatic creatures, which are also prone to get diseases and be more exposed to toxic chemicals.Tropical fish (of low commercial value excluding tuna) would increase, while sub-tropical fish (high commercial value) would reduce. The oxygen content in water reduces sharply at night, which makes many kinds of shrimp and fish die or be stunted. II. 2. 2. Impacts on the energy sector: When the temperature increases, energy consumption of some production sectors and domestic consumption also increases as they use more electrical devices: fans, air-conditioners, industrial cooling systems, etc, as well as pumping water for plants.A study by the Energy Institute, the Ministry of Industry and Trade shows that when the temperature in summer rises 1à °C, additional electricity charged from 9 am to 4pm increases higher than in other hours by 2. 2%/year, meaning electricity consumption would increase by 1%, especially in domestic, commercial and service sectors. When the temperature increases, the thermal cycle output of steam turbines reduces, which wastes fuel. When the temperature increases 1à °C, coal consumption of a 300 MW coal-fired thermal power plant would increase 0. 5%, equivalent to 4,500 tons/year.For a gas-turbine power plant, when the temperature increase 1à °C, generating capacity will reduce the productivity of a 250 MW gas-turbine by 0. 5%, which loses 7. 5 million kWh annually. Unusual storms and floods and rising sea level would also negatively affect the electricity operation, transmission and distribution systems, oil rigs, oil and gas pipelines to the m ainland, and oil up-loading to storage tanks. Besides, due to unusual heavy storms, reservoirs of hydro-power stations could not effectively regulate water which increase risks to the lowland area.Rains and storms would cause landslides and destroy dykes and hydropower system, which would impact the environment on a large scale. II. 3. Impacts on other economic sectors: Storms, heavy rains and floods which increase in intensity and frequency, would damage and destroy infrastructure and facilities and damage the natural and social environment seriously, sometimes even to the extent where it is unable to recover. Rising sea level would make some beaches disappear, while others would adjust by shifting landward. It would affect cultural and historical sites, natural reserves and eco-tourism sites. Increasing temperature and shorter time of low temperature would reduce the attraction of mountain resorts, while the tourist season at the coast would last longer. (Source: Climate change imp acts on Vietnam). Construction and industrial clusters/zones built in the plains would face higher risks of flooding and difficulties in rainfall drainage as well as flooding caused by rising river and sea levels.Extreme weather conditions and natural disaster increase would reduce the durability of materials, devices, facilities and infrastructure. II. 4. Impacts on society: Climate change has direct and indirect influences on society and the communityââ¬â¢s health. Unusual climate manifestation, prolonged cold and hot spells, increasing or reducing temperature have negative influences on peopleââ¬â¢s health.Climate change also cause epidemics and other sources of diseases to occur and spread more widely such as type A influenza H1N1 virus, type A influenza H5N1 virus, diarrhoea, cholera, and other kinds of tropical diseases such as malaria, dengue fever, Japanese encephalitis, dermatological diseases, sore eyes and poisoning. Female Education And A Nations Development Education Essay
Female instruction is indispensable for the development of a state. This is chiefly because adult females are involved in all kinds of activities both at a regional degree and at the community degree such as kid bearing and family jobs etc. Hence it is really of import to supply quality instruction to adult females to assist them lend to the development of the state in a meaningful manner. Assorted surveies show that adult females ââ¬Ës instruction is really of import in order to better the socio-economic place of their households. It is the inequality in entree to instruction for female pupils that prevents them from obtaining the indispensable instruction necessary for their well being and their household ââ¬Ës development. The traditional thought of many societies that adult females are merely supposed to make the family work has contributed mostly to the low degrees of female instruction around the Earth. It is seen nevertheless that the societies that have focused on suppl ying better instruction to adult females have better indexs of societal public assistance. These societies for illustration have lower infant mortality rate apart from that the issue of lower birthrate rates, besides increased life anticipation, improved nutrition and most significantly better chances for their kids. Other factors such as residential position and parent ââ¬Ës concern and attitude towards female pupils besides plays an of import function in bettering the educational position of female pupils in any society. Parent ââ¬Ës degree of instruction besides has a direct impact on their girl ââ¬Ës instruction. The nexus between the female parent and girl is the strongest. Poverty, parent ââ¬Ës professional position, deficiency of skilled instructors and deficiency of inducements such as scholarships for adult females, want of parental attention and proper educational policies affect the criterion of female instruction. ( I.A. Adetunde, 2008 ) Therefore Women ââ¬Ës instruction is a really of import issue. Womans who are educated can do profound picks in the affair of wellness, nutrition and basic upbringing of a kid. There is great impact on infant mortality wellness, birthrate, productiveness and a kid ââ¬Ës academic public presentation if adult females are educated. On 8th March 2004 Laura Bush ( the first lady at that clip ) said on the adult females ââ¬Ës twenty-four hours that when a adult females is denied instruction ââ¬Å" you ââ¬Ëve denied half of the population the opportunity to win and the opportunity to lend to a society and to a civilization. â⬠she besides said that ââ¬Å" Womans are more likely to be able to do informed pick so that their kids do n't endure from malnutrition or other diseases and guarantee that their kids can have best wellness attention. â⬠In Every civilization, the duty of the upbringing and nourishing of a kid lies in the custodies of the female parent. Due to this duty the adult females ââ¬Ës instruction has gained rather an importance globally. Surveies reveal that adult females ââ¬Ës instruction has strong deductions on every facet of a kid ââ¬Ës upbringing and one of them is the kid ââ¬Ës academic public presentation. Children of educated female parents are seen to hold better academic public presentation as compared to kids of less or uneducated female parents. ( Tahir Andrabi, Jishnu Das, Asim Ijaz Khwaja: March 2009 ) Educated female parents can assist their kids throughout their life, but most significantly they can assist their kids in their early yearss of instruction. They try to indulge their kids in more productive educational activities apart from what they study at school. This enhances the kid ââ¬Ës educational capablenesss and helps them achieve success. Harmonizing to a survey an extra twelvemonth of station compulsory schooling of a female parent has a positive impact on their kid ââ¬Ës academic public presentation i.e. ââ¬Å" female parents who stay in full clip instruction beyond the minimal school go forthing age are more likely to show positive educational attitudes and behaviors such as reading to their kids â⬠. ( Leon Feinstein and Ricardo Sabates: January 2008 ) ââ¬Å" Higher instruction is systematically associated with a higher likeliness of matrimony, whereas less instruction is associated with a higher likeliness of divorce â⬠( Jennifer March Augustine, 2010 ) . Therefore educated female parents tend to hold more stable relationships and household position. This in bend affects their kids ââ¬Ës academic public presentation. Children have a healthy environment to populate in and therefore can concentrate more on their surveies and execute good. The flow of resources such as clip, money and socio-emotional support etc from the female parent to kids is affected by this relationship position. ( Jennifer March Augustine, 2010 ) . Marital and birthrate forms have been seen to alter over the last few decennaries. Womans who are more educated ( college alumnuss ) have been the least likely to acquire married and have kids historically. Today nevertheless, the state of affairs is altering and this matrimony spread is gnawing The returns to marriage hold changed. College educated adult females marry subsequently, do non see matrimony as a ââ¬Å" fiscal security â⬠, have fewer kids and worsening divorce rates since 1970 ââ¬Ës as compared to adult females without college grades. These factors help adult females to hold a better and a healthier household life which in bend helps them in their Childs upbringing. The kids of more educated adult females therefore can concentrate more on their surveies as they have a healthier environment to analyze in and so they perform good ( Adam Isen Feb. 2010 ) . A Mothers instruction influences a kid largely during the kid ââ¬Ës early old ages of instruction ( primary instruction ) . Educated female parents make their kids pass more clip in out-of-door activities, reading etc and are concerned about their kid ââ¬Ës advancement at school and have outlooks of the kid ââ¬Ës future educational accomplishments. This encourages the kid to concentrate more on h is surveies and enhances his capablenesss. ( Leon Feinstein and Ricardo Sabates: January 2008 ) . Furthermore there are significant intergenerational returns to instruction. An extra twelvemonth of a female parent ââ¬Ës schooling makes a positive part to the Childs academic public presentation. It increases the Childs public presentation on a standardised math trial by about 0.1 of a standard divergence and reduces the incidence of behavioral jobs particularly for kids aged 7-8.There are assorted channels that transmit the consequence of maternal instruction to the kid, including parental investings throughout different phases of a Childs life and household environment. Educated adult females tend to hold a healthier place environment with better and more stable household lives which so contribute to their Childs educational excellence. Maternal instruction besides reduces grade repeat and the incidence of behavioral jobs. Educated female parents fundamentally avoid early childbirth, are more likely to be married to educated work forces and tend to hold higher incomes. Thus th ey can lend in several ways to their Childs instruction for illustration through books, affecting them in extracurricular activities or purchasing them a computing machine. This extra investing pays off in the signifier of improved child public presentation in all academic facets of his life. Even if educated female parents work more they do non pretermit their kids as they are cognizant of the negative effects of making so ( Pedro Carneiro, Sep 2007 ) . Besides educated female parents tend to pass more clip with their kids and their kids tend to pass more clip analyzing outside school therefore there is a strong impact of maternal instruction on their kid ââ¬Ës trial tonss. ( Tahir Andrabi, Jishnu Das and Asim Ijaz Khwaja, March 2009 ) . Educated female parents bring in more encouragement and ability for their kids to win in life. Children of educated female parents are normally more confident, free from anxiousnesss, ambitious, self reliant and more focussed. It is seen that an addition in female parent ââ¬Ës instruction leads to an addition in the pupils ââ¬Ë accomplishment at school. Those female parents who stayed on in instruction instead than merely holding the basic primary instruction can assist their kids in a better manner. A direct relationship is seen between a female parent ââ¬Ës instruction degree and their kid ââ¬Ës academic public presentation. ( Azra Parveen & A ; Muhammad Tayyab Alam 2008 ) . Traditionally it has been thought that an addition in investing in adult females ââ¬Ës schooling wages off in the signifier of increased schooling of the following coevals. Some writers have a different position nevertheless. Harmonizing to them the positive relationship between mother-child schooling can non wholly be considered true as it is slightly colored upward due to the correlativities between schooling and assortative coupling and heritable ââ¬Å" ability â⬠. The other surveies, they argue have non considered these factors and therefore reason demoing a positive relationship between mother-child schooling and instruction. ââ¬Å" An addition in the schooling of adult females does non hold good effects in footings of the schooling of kids â⬠( Jere R. Behrman and Mark R. Rosenzweig, 2002 ) . Increases maternal schooling and instruction alternatively makes the female parents concentrate less on their places, household and specifically their kids. It is emphasize d that the clip of the adult females is an indispensable factor in childbirth and therefore adult females should concentrate more on their households and non on instruction. This, they argue will take to a better academic hereafter for their kid. Better schooling of the female parent nevertheless can better a Childs wellness in certain state of affairss. Basically the consequence of puting in adult females ââ¬Ës schooling requires attending to the function played by schooling in the labour and matrimony market for adult females. ( Jere R. Behrman and Mark R. Rosenzweig, 2002 ) Literacy position of female parents besides strongly affects the wellness and nutritionary province of their kids therefore literate female parents can take better attention of their kid ââ¬Ës wellness and protect them against several diseases. With illiterate female parents nevertheless there are opportunities of kids developing malnutrition particularly kids less than three old ages of age who are scraggy. Malnutrition negatively affects the kid ââ¬Ës academic public presentation. An educated female parent takes better attention of their Childs wellness and therefore their kid is more successful throughout his life. Although there is a positive correlativity between a female parent ââ¬Ës instruction and their Childs wellness some surveies reveal that there is barely any important consequence of a female parent ââ¬Ës instruction on Childs wellness if female parents have got merely primary instruction. Further it has been found that the first three old ages of female pare nt ââ¬Ës instruction has no impact on the Childs wellness. The impact is seen after the first three old ages and the consequence is non additive in instruction. After 4 to 6 old ages of instruction, the magnitude of this consequence becomes little but so once more picks up after 1 old ages of instruction. ( Meherun Ahmed May 2009 ) . However, some bookmans do non wholly back up the correlativity that there is a strong causal relationship between maternal instruction and child wellness. Harmonizing to them this nexus has barely been analyzed decently utilizing the most appropriate statistical theoretical accounts. They are utilizing the community-level fixed-effects theoretical accounts and therefore reason ââ¬Å" maternal instruction may be a placeholder for the socioeconomic position of the family every bit good as for features of the community of abode â⬠. Therefore harmonizing to them there is a possibility that the positive relationship between maternal instruction and child wellness may be untrue. By commanding for a few socioeconomic variables the maternal education/child wellness nexus is seen to be weak. Three markers of kid wellness viz. infant mortality, immunisation position and kids ââ¬Ës height-for-age have been examined. Maternal instruction has a important impact on height-for-age and inf ant mortality in merely a few states around the universe. However on the other manus maternal instruction has a strong positive consequence on kids ââ¬Ës immunisation position in about half of the states of the universe even after implementing the community and single degree controls. ( SONALDE DESAI AND SOUMYA ALVA, 1998 ) Harmonizing to another survey, educated parents tend to hold educated kids. The writer focused on analyzing whether the intergenerational transmittal of human capital is more behavioral ( raising ) or innate ( nature ) . The information collected helped in dividing familial from environmental parental influences. Consequences of the analysis emphasised that the raising constituent is more of import for both parents ( female parent and male parent ) .The instruction of the most educated female grownup in a family has a strong positive consequence on the schooling of the kids in that family. This holds true for a Childs biological parents and for the parents of an adopted kid. It can be said that the more the female parent is educated, the better the Childs academic public presentation. When male childs and misss are analysed individually it is seen that if the raising constituent is isolated, the male parents education affairs more for male childs whereas a female parents instruction affairs more for misss. The positive effects of the instruction of the adoptive parents are merely seen for kids related to the caput of their new families ( Damien de Walque, 2005 ) .Research UndertakingLiterature ReviewByAsna ShahidSection G07U0469Submitted toAnam TahirLahore School of Economics
